He didn't say it was for people who can't handle "things", rather that it was for people who can't handle being alone. To answer your question, every culture that has developed has included religion BECAUSE of ignorance, fear, and as an "opiate of the masses". You don't have to fear death if you blindly believe in an 'impossible to disprove' afterlife.
