Једна од одлика вила као демонских бића јесте та да се оне по правилу јављају у множини и анонимно. У нашим веровањима, посебно у фолклору, јављају се три виле: '"К њој ми долећеше/ Три виле бијеле" (Караџић, I, 1973: 76), ређе девет: "Коло игра девет 6'јелих вила" (Јунпјес., 1896: 404). Међу вилама постоји једна која предводи остале, тако да их каткада има и десет: "Ту имаде девет сестреница/ И пред њима вила најстарија/ По имену вила Јерисавља" (Петран., II, 1989: 23). Међутим, има и вила које живе за себе, обично као чуварице извора или бунара, као на пример поменута вила са планине Урвина. Или је реч о вили баждарици - која брани приступ ка води у планини, и која тражи откупнину за коришћење воде, односно прелаза са оне стране реке. У развијеној епској поезији виле су још више индивидуализоване, тако да каткад добијају и особена, лична имена, као што су: Равијојла, Андесила, Јерисавља, Анђелија. У поезији је вила најчешће приказана као лепа. "Да виле имају животињске ноге, козје или коњске или магареће" познато је и данашњим Грцима. Виле уопште могу имати козји облик. Када је реч о основним функцијама вила, бар на основи нашег фолклора, њихово је главно занимање играње у колу. И према другим словенским изворима карактеристично својство вила је музикалност (Ет. Слов, 1995: 370). Навешћу овде и један Милићевићев запис: "Сељаци из околних села на питање: шта је то? одговарају: да је то Виљоколо, то јест коло горских вила које ту играју своје вилинске игре; а оно место што је издигнуто на средини, веле да је за свирача, који свира тим планинским играчицама". Исто тако, "кад је копан гранични јарак, ни један од сељака из оближњих села није хтео ударити будаком у Виљоколо, бојећи се вила; него су га раскопали неки Турци, који су се ту задесили. - И сада се трава око Виљокола коси, а на самом колу нико не сме ни сламке да узбере" (Милић., 1884: 274). Овај пример показује како име једног простора, насеобине, потеза, поседује, истовремено, снажну митску импликацију коју народ тога краја веома уважава. Али, виле воле и да се такмиче са младићима у игрању и издржљивости. Што се женских послова тиче, виле из наше народне књижевности воле ткање. Оне "имају и млинове и витлове", дакле, интересују се за брашно, будући да се баве мешењем и печењем хлеба. "Једна од познатих функција вилиних је да су оне 'чуварке ратарства' оне дају илодност пољску, а исто тако и сточну плодност". Међутим, оне могу човека и да оболесте. О каквој је то болести реч? "Најчешће се болест манифестује у беснилу и умној поремећености", тако да особа постаје виловњак. Каже се: виловњак је "бесан човек, као да су виле у њему". Познато је да виле имају и мантичку способност, тј. оне могу вршити улогу иророчице. Познат је пример из епске поезије, када вила са Урвине планине предсказује смрт Марку Краљевићу. "Ал' му б'јела одговара вила:/ 'Побратиме, Краљевићу Марко,/ тебе нитко Шарца отет неће,/ нит ти можеш умријети, Марко од јунака ни од оштре сабље,/ од топуза ни од бојна копља:/ ти с' не бојиш на земљи јунака;/ већ ћеш, болан, умријети, Марко,/ ја од бога, од старог крвника'".
