Shawn Johnson is fourth US gymnast to win all-around title

15-year old Shawn Johnson of Des Moines, Iowa clinched the women's all-around world title after an outstanding floor routine. Johnson was fifth after two rotations before she stunned the crowd and the judges on the floor. In her first year of senior competition, she also adds a US team gold medal to her individual. The United States won the men's 4x100-meter freestyle relay final at the world swimming championships on Sunday. Michael Phelps teamed up with Neil Walker, Cullen Jones and Jason Lezak to win the gold in a combined time of three minutes, 12.72 seconds, just 0.26 outside the world record the U.S. set in Canada last year. American teenager Kate Ziegler beat Laure Manaudou of France in a last-lap sprint to win the women's 800-meter freestyle final. Nastia Liukin regains the world title on balance beam

Nastia Liukin (USA) returned to the Worlds this year to take back the balance beam world title she had won in 2005. After a solid performance with minor wobbles, Liukin dismounted with a two and a half twist that put her 0.125 ahead of Romania's Steliana Nistor, winning back her title. (WCSN, WCSN.com)
Phelps Shatters 200-meter Butterfly World Record

Michael Phelps broke a second world record in 24 hours to collect his third gold medal at the world swimming championships on Wednesday. The American won the 200-meter butterfly final in a time of one minute, 52.09 seconds to wipe a massive 1.62 off the previous record of 1:53.71 -- which he set in Columbia, Missouri last month. Gay wins 200-meter to complete double gold

American Tyson Gay became the third man in history to win the world championship sprint double when he powered to victory in the 200 meters final on Thursday. Gay streaked home in a championship record time of 19.76 seconds four days after his victory in the 100 meters to match the feat of compatriots Maurice Greene in 1999 and Justin Gatlin two years ago. Jamaica's Usain Bolt finished second in 19.91 and Gay's training partner and compatriot Wallace Spearmon took bronze in 20.05. (WCSN, WCSN.com)
Italian Howe celebrates, wins long jump silver

The European champion Andrew Howe leaps past the field and moves into first place with his final jump of 8.47 meters. Celebrating wildly, Howe displaced front-runner Irving Saladino of Panama for the lead and believed he had done enough to win the title. Gay chases down Powell for 100-meter gold

American Tyson Gay surged past Jamaica's Asafa Powell to win gold in the men's 100-meter at the world championships on Sunday. Gay caught world-record holder Powell after 50 meters and clocked 9.85 seconds. Derrick Atkins of Bahamas finished strongly to take silver in 9.91. Powell, whose world record of 9.77 was never in danger in balmy conditions in Osaka, trailed home in 9.96 to take bronze. (WCSN, WCSN.com)

American Michael Phelps smashed Ian Thorpe's 200-meter freestyle world record to win gold at the world championships in Melbourne on Tuesday. Phelps left his rivals in his wash as he raced to a stunning victory in one minute 43.86 seconds, wiping 0.20 seconds off the previous record of 1:44.06 set by Australian Thorpe at the 2001 world championships in Japan.
